We Build for the Communities We Belong To

Obsidian Manufacturing makes custom glass display cases and modular exhibit systems for museums, galleries, jeweler retailers, sports heritage institutions, and cultural centers across Canada and the United States. The people and organizations we serve are not just clients. They are communities we have chosen to be part of, professionally and personally.

This page is about that belonging: the industry associations we are active members of, the values we bring to every project, and the way we think about our responsibility to the broader communities that give our work its meaning.

The People behind the Projects

Every display case we build exists to serve a purpose beyond the object it holds. A museum case protects a piece of history and makes it accessible to the public. A jeweler showcase presents something made with care in a way that communicates its value. A sports hall of fame display honors an athlete whose contribution deserves to be remembered properly.

We take that seriously. The communities that commission our work, whether they are curators, independent retailers, heritage institutions, or sports organizations, deserve a manufacturing partner who understands the significance of what they are doing and brings genuine expertise to it. Our active memberships in the professional associations that represent these communities are one expression of that commitment. They are how we stay connected to the people we build for, how we remain accountable to the standards those industries set, and how we continue to learn.

Active in the Museum and Cultural Sector

Museums, galleries and cultural institutions make up a significant and important part of what Obsidian Manufacturing does. We build cases that hold artefacts, artworks, and objects of cultural significance, and we take the responsibility that comes with that seriously. Our memberships in the Canadian Museum Association and the Ontario Museum Association are not formalities. They connect us directly to the professional community whose work we support.

Canadian Museum Association (CMA)

The Canadian Museum Association is the national voice of Canada's museum sector, representing institutions and professionals from every province and territory. As a CMA member, Obsidian Manufacturing participates in the national conversation about standards, accessibility, and the future of cultural institutions in Canada. Membership also provides our clients with the assurance that we are a recognized and accountable member of their professional community, not simply a supplier from outside it. For curators, collections managers, and exhibit designers working with us, our CMA membership means they are working with a manufacturer who understands museum standards and who is invested in the sector's wellbeing, not just its purchasing budget.

Ontario Museum Association (OMA)

The Ontario Museum Association represents over 700 museums, galleries, and related organizations across the province. Our OMA membership keeps us connected to the institutions we work with most frequently, many of which are based in Ontario or operate within its professional networks. It also keeps us informed about the evolving needs, guidelines, and challenges of the Ontario museum sector, which directly improves our ability to design and fabricate cases that meet those needs. Being part of the OMA also means we are a recognized member of the community our clients belong to. When a small regional museum or community gallery comes to us for display infrastructure, they are not dealing with an outside contractor who does not understand their world. They are dealing with a member of the same professional family.

Connected to the Jeweler Retail Community

Jeweler retailers are among the clients who place the most demanding expectations on display cases. The showcase is not background furniture in a jeweler store. It is the primary interface between the product and the customer. The quality of light, the clarity of the glass, the depth of the case interior, the finish on the base, and the integrity of the locking mechanism all affect how a piece of jeweler is experienced by the person looking at it. Getting it right matters.

Obsidian Manufacturing is a member of the Canadian Jewelers Association, the national professional organization representing jewelers, retailers, designers, and suppliers across Canada. Our membership reflects our commitment to understanding the specific requirements of jeweler retail display and to remaining current with the trends, standards, and evolving needs of the industry.

For jewelers working with us, CJA membership is a signal that we understand their world and take it seriously. We are not simply a glass and metal fabricator who happens to make jeweler cases. We are part of the professional community that jeweler retail belongs to.

Honoring Athletic Achievement through Sports Heritage

Sports halls of fame occupy a unique space in the cultural landscape. They are part museum, part community celebration, part historical archive. The objects they preserve and display, jerseys, trophies, equipment, photographs, personal effects, represent the achievements of individuals who meant something to their communities, their sports, and in many cases their country. That work deserves the same quality of display infrastructure as any art gallery or cultural institution.

Obsidian Manufacturing is an active member of both the Sports Hall of Fame community and the International Sports Heritage Association, and we are proud of it. Sports heritage is a sector where the importance of great display design is sometimes underestimated. The stories being told in these spaces are powerful ones, and the cases that hold the objects connected to those stories need to do justice to them.

We bring the same fabrication standards to a sports hall of fame installation that we bring to a national museum or a luxury jeweler boutique: precision glass fabrication, archival-safe materials, integrated lighting, and custom dimensions designed around the specific objects and spaces involved. The objects change. The standard does not.

Sports Hall of Fame

Halls of fame across Canada and the United States are homes for athletic legacy. They collect and display the material evidence of careers and moments that shaped their sports, their communities, and in many cases national identity. Obsidian Manufacturing builds the infrastructure that makes those displays possible, and our active involvement in the Sports Hall of Fame community keeps us connected to the people who run these institutions and the standards they require.

International Sports Heritage Association (ISHA)

The International Sports Heritage Association is the professional organization that connects sports museums, halls of fame, archives, and related institutions around the world. ISHA members include some of the most respected sports heritage institutions in North America and beyond. Our ISHA membership places Obsidian within this global professional network, giving us access to the latest thinking in sports heritage display, conservation, and institutional practice, and giving our clients access to a manufacturer who is genuinely embedded in their professional world.

For sports heritage institutions considering a display case project, our ISHA membership is a meaningful credential. It means we have been working within this community long enough to understand its specific requirements, and that we are invested in its future.

Our Approach to Sustainability Is in the Work Itself

Obsidian Manufacturing does not currently hold formal environmental certifications and we are not going to claim a sustainability story we have not earned. What we will say is this: the way we design and build our products reflects a genuine commitment to longevity, reparability, and the reduction of unnecessary waste. That commitment is practical rather than performative, and it shows up in the work.

The Logic Exhibit System, which is now part of the Obsidian product family, was designed around a principle that we fully embrace: the greatest number of possible display configurations using the fewest possible components, all of which can be disassembled, reconfigured, and reused indefinitely. In an industry where temporary exhibition infrastructure is routinely discarded after a single show, a system built to last and be redeployed is a meaningful alternative. The cases an institution assembles today can become a completely different installation next year. Nothing has to go to waste.

Our custom glass display cases are built with the same philosophy. We use high-quality materials because quality lasts. Cases built to a lower standard need replacing sooner, which means more manufacturing, more materials, and more waste. Cases built to Obsidian’s standard can serve a client for decades, and individual components can be repaired or replaced rather than requiring the whole unit to be discarded. We design for the long term because it is the right way to build things.

We are transparent about where we are on the sustainability journey: we are doing it through the work, not through frameworks and certifications, and we are honest about that distinction.

What We Actually Stand For

Community involvement, for us, is not a marketing strategy. It is the natural result of working in sectors where relationships and trust matter as much as technical capability. A museum curator who works with us needs to know that we understand their world. A jeweler specifying a new showcase needs to know that we understand theirs. A sports heritage institution commissioning a hall of fame installation needs to know that we take the significance of what they are doing seriously.

Our memberships in the CMA, OMA, Canadian Jewelers Association, Sports Hall of Fame, and ISHA are how we maintain those connections and demonstrate that we are genuinely part of the professional communities we serve. They are also how we stay accountable. Being a member of an industry association means operating to the standards that association upholds. We take that seriously.

Beyond formal memberships, the way we work reflects a set of values that do not change from project to project. We design things to last. We build to a standard we are proud of. We are honest with clients about what is achievable and what is not. And we bring genuine expertise to every sector we work in, because the people and institutions who commission our work deserve a partner who understands what they are trying to do.

Good designs and great relationships come from collaboration. I am always up for a challenge.
